At the end of last term we took a series of photos to attempt a simple animation. We were inspired to do this after seeing an animation done by a child in room 6. It is a small beginning that we are going to build on.

The main types of bridges

Our trip under the Auckland Harbour Bridge

Last week we went on a school trip. When we got back to school we thought about some of the things we saw and heard and have captured these using iMovie.

Week 7 Term 3 2009

With gusts of wind and a beautiful clear sky we flew our parachutes on the school field. The children squealed with delight as the wind tugged at their parachutes and they let them go. We were fascinated in the way that when the wind died down and our parachutes fell they would travel along the ground by the wind. We had a great deal of fun and used the experience to write a personal recount.




Later in the week we began to find out about the Auckland Harbour Bridge from the books and the internet. We are collating these facts on a large class Y chart.

Weeks 5 and 6 Term 3 2009

Over the past few weeks we have explored the three main types of bridges - arch, suspension and beam bridge. We found out a lot about how they look and what makes them strong.

We took part in the technology challenge along with the rest of the junior classes. We all had to construct our bridges using newspaper, string and tape. We had to work in teams. It was a lot of fun and it was a great opportunity to show how well we could work as a team.



We have written information reports about swing bridges and have begun to label the parts of a swing bridge using a image we imported on KidPix - Look out for these reports on our blog in the next few weeks.

Week 4 Term 3 2009

On Wednesday we got ready for the technology challenge - making a metre long bridge using newspaper and string. Some of us made suspension bridges, others made beam bridges. Working in groups of four we had to work together as a team, sharing resources and

co-operating each other.

We visited the junior playground, walked along the swing bridges and each took a photo of one. As a class we are gathering facts from books and the internet about swing bridges - what they look like, what they are made of, where they are used and any other interesting facts we find. We are presenting this information in a class Y chart. Our knowledge of swing bridges is developing.

Sarah bought in a photo of a very long wharf - this has sparked a discussion about whether or not a wharf is a bridge - what do you think?

As the week drew to a close we used wordle to record words we knew related to bridges.

Week 1 and 2 Term 3 2009

Well the term is under way and so is our new topic of study - ' Bridges ' . We have begun the unit by writing a definition of what a bridge is and drawing a bridge on KidPix. These will be on our blog in the coming weeks so look out for them.



Brodie brought in this photo taken when he was little of a swing bridge across the Storm River in South Africa. This lead to an interesting discussion about swing bridges and one we will continue next week as we make a Y chart to collate all the information we collect.


Over the past two weeks we have written narratives - one about teenagers going to the movies and not being able to see as a lady with a rather large hat sat in front in front of them and another about a monkey snatching a banana from a zoo keeper. These will be on the blog over time as the children draw pictures to go with their stories. These stories are delightful and I am sure you will enjoy listening to them.
