Drawing dragons

2012 is the year of the dragon. For art this week, after looking at pictures of dragons we sketched one. Then we went over the sketch with a black vivid pen and coloured the image in using dye. Below you can see Zavier and Matthew working through each process. The dragons will be cut out and placed on a painted background that the children created by dragging paint with a sponge.

Butterfly - is it a female or a male?

As a class we have enjoyed looking at the butterflies in the butterfly house. We are becoming experts at identifying the difference between a male and female butterfly. Look at the photo below - is this butterfly a female or a male?

It is a male butterfly - we know this because of the black dots on its smaller wings

Blowing up a balloon

This week we looked at blowing up a balloon using something other than our breathe. Using our knowledge of the reaction made when we mixed soda and vinegar together we decided to give it a go. Very carefully we put some baking soda in the balloon and then put it over the bottle.

Jamie very carefully tipped the balloon up - so that the baking soda would go into the bottle. Watch the video below.

This is what happened!

The butterfly house

As a class we went to look at the butterfly house. We stood and watched the many caterpillars busily munching on the leaves as well as the many who were busy crawling up the net to higher places to make their chrysalis.
