During the last week of the term, we invited our buddy class room 8 to visit us so we could show them some of the favourite experiments we have done this term. It was a great way to share our knowledge with others.

A soap boat

In small groups we put sprinkled powder on to the surface of the water.

We then carefully placed a boat with a tiny piece of soap as a rudder into the water and watched.

This is what happened .........

We wrote about what we saw. We will post some of these in the future.

Making a ball of ice

This week we put water into a balloon and a glove. We put them into the freezer overnight. On Thursday morning we took them out of the the freezer and had a wonderful time looking at and touching the ice. The classroom was a buzz of excitement.

Blowing up a balloon

This week we looked at blowing up a balloon using something other than our breathe. Using our knowledge of the reaction made when we mixed soda and vinegar together we decided to give it a go. Very carefully we put some baking soda in the balloon and then put it over the bottle.

Jamie very carefully tipped the balloon up - so that the baking soda would go into the bottle. Watch the video below.

This is what happened!

The butterfly house

As a class we went to look at the butterfly house. We stood and watched the many caterpillars busily munching on the leaves as well as the many who were busy crawling up the net to higher places to make their chrysalis.

Science experiment

This week we have continued to explore what happens when we mix two or more things together. We made a volcano out of sand then put baking soda, dye powder and vinegar together in the crater and waited and watched. Wow the fun we had.

We found that when we mixed these things together we got a ......

Clever photos by Mr Barnes

Mr Barnes captured these photos last week and sent them to us in an email. We think Mr Barnes is very clever to take such detailed photos we could see the butterflies wings and the dew drops on the chrysalis. Well done Mr Barnes.

This is the beautiful butterfly that emerged.

Weekly update

This week we put sunblock and water together to see what happened - would it mix, separate or react?

We all got to shake it - when we shake it we say 'shake it, shake it room one is cool' then we pass it on to the next person.

We then tried adding sunblock to a fizzy raspberry drink - we thought the sunblock looked like long white worms!!!!

We got to shake it !

The results were quite different - come into our room and have a look at each of the bottles.
