Mr Barnes continues to work on the butterfly house. On Friday Nick took this photo of Mr Barnes preparing the frame for the roof. Some of the children in room 2 are sure they saw a butterfly fly through the framework of the house this week. It is all very exciting.
Today we said farewell to Flynn. We made him a card and he gave us a really neat game he'd made - a fishing game. Thanks Flynn. We will miss you, but we will think of you often and will enjoy playing the fishing game.
Its amazing to think that this is the last week of the term. We have continued to be busy finishing off bits and pieces.
On Monday we went to watch the senior production of Little stars. A lot of us have brother or sisters in the production. Summer was our official photographer. She took all of the photos below.
On Wednesday we heard that Rebekah and her family had been rescued from their yacht by a French warship. We looked online and read about it and were pleased that she was safe.
On Friday we welcomed Rebakah back to our classroom. We were all so pleased to see her.
Friday was PJ day - with lots of us coming to school in our PJ's. It made getting ready for school really easy.
Here are some of the fish we drew earlier in the term and dragged blue backgrounds for. Next term look out for images of the boats we have just finished.
On Thursday we had 'blue' day. We started the day by sharing in things that we had brought in that were blue and as you can see from the photos some of us had made a point of wearing a little bit of blue.
In the afternoon we proudly wore our badges to the Junior syndicate assembly where we all shared what we had been doing during 'blue day'. It was a great way to end the day.
This week we have continued to explore the water cycle building on the knowledge we already have. Our shared book has been the on line book ' Drizzle the drop' and our poem was been 'The Water cycle' We have explored the following on line activity to reinforce our learning with each of us completing this activity and printing it off.
We then made our own terrariums so that we could view the water cycle first hand.
Last week Christiane brought in a KFC box which had the instructions on a neat activity called Ice melting madness. The game was simple in groups of 2 or more you had to melt a cube of ice There were a few simple rules namely every team member had to hold the ice at least once and you were not allowed to place the ice in your mouth. We worked in groups of 4 and timed how long it took us to melt the cube of ice. The fun we had and the innovative ways we found to melt the ice. Some of us blew on it, others rubbed it on their faces while others popped in donwn their tops! It was so much fun we did it three times until our supply of ice ran out!!! Most groups managed to get faster in melting the ice.
At the end of the week , we were delighted to see that our water terrariums are working, with our water cress sprouting. We took the following photos of our work.
In week 5 we had an visit from Sally from Water care who inspired us to take care with what we put down our drains as they all lead to the sea. With Sally we also made rivers and streams and had a great deal of fun together.
In week 6 to our delight on Wednesday and Thursday morning we found the field just outside our classroom a wonderful sea of white. With our class camera we each took turns to capture the frost. See our photos below taken by the budding photographers in room 15. We then wrote poems about the frost. Look out for these as they will feature shortly on our blog.
On Friday night we had the school disco - a chance to dress up to be wild and wacky. From the photos below you can see that a lot of us enjoyed exploring the many different ways you can wear glow sticks. It was a great evening, enjoyed by all.
We read a book about rain and were excited to find instructions on how to make a rain gauge. The next day Brodie came in with a bottle and we made a rain gauge. Next week we will put it out everyday and record the results.
Later in the week we made puddles - one in the sun and one in the shade. We made predictions as to which would evaporate first. We were right with the one in the sun evaporating first. Many of us were able to explain that when the water heats up it turns into water vapour.
It's been another busy week in room 15. We have been busy publishing our work to put on the blog - look out for our work in the coming week.
We continue to learn about water - this week we turned water into water vapour - a gas. Katharine was our official photographer and took the photos below.
In maths everyone is enjoying using the foam shapes to make pictures - the children are proud of their creations and have used the class camera to capture them for you all to see.
This week we have had the pleasure of having Mr Harwood in our classroom. He is training to be an Education Officer for the police. He helped out in our class for 4 days and took a lesson on keeping ourselves save in the bush.
We have been investigating how water turns into ice this week. We did an experiment, made some predictions and noted our findings. We found out that - water freezes at 0 degrees Celsius - ice is lighter than water - water expands when it freezes - ice will freeze into the shape it is in
We loved passing our ice around the circle and talking about how cold it was. Then we took photos of the ice.
It's great to see everyone back at school for a busy and full filled term.
We have started our inquiry based on Water, water everywhere by writing a definition for water that we might find in a picture dictionary. With our definitions written we drew a picture on KidPix to go with it. These can be seen below. We will write definitions again at the end of the inquiry and see how much our thinking has changed.
We also used the class camera this week to drop a droplet of water on an Autumn leaf and take a photo of it. Great fun was had by all with some very impressive photos being taken.
At the end of the walk Mrs Rennie-Younger took a photo of us throwing some leaves up in the air. I think you will agree that the expressions on the faces tell you how much fun we had.
During the week Mr Gordon came and collected groups of us to complete a writing survey on line - This was very exciting - with everyone keen to go with Mr Gordon to complete the task.
By the end of the week we had begun to use the schools brand new flip video to record each other reading our Autumn poems. Look out for these recordings as they will feature on our blog shortly.
Friday our buddy class came to visit and we looked at our blog and asked Room 10 to help write a comment on it. We hope that next week students in Room 10 will look at our blog during reading time and leave us a comment or two.
We are a class of Year 1 students at Sunnybrae Normal School, Auckland. Mrs Rennie-Younger teaches us on Monday, Tuesday and Friday. Mrs Morley teaches us on Wednesday and Thursday. We hope you enjoy sharing our learning. Please feel free to leave us a message by clicking on the comment section at the bottom of an entry.
